Summer Reading and the 2nd annual LASA Raptor Book Fair
LASA Summer Homework/Reading
Does LASA have Summer Homework and/or Required Reading?
We get this question every year and want to make sure that you know the answer:
NO! LASA does not have any summer homework and/or reading assignments. We believe strongly that kids should do other things in the summer - things they want to do, pursue, etc. and we believe they should read things they want to read for fun.
LASA Library Book Fair
The LASA Raptor Library is hosting it's 2nd annual Book Fair! We've partnered with Austin's own Book People and our fair opened today! It is open from today through next Sunday, March 5th, 2023 at 11:59pm. Any books can be purchased online at www.bookpeople.com using code LASA and/or in the store, where you can tell them at checkout that your purchases are to benefit LASA.
Our parent group mentioned the book fair to some of you at one parent coffees a couple weeks ago and we wanted to share it here for everyone.
First, incoming 9th graders will have required reading during the school year, 2023-24 (please do not read in the summer to "get ahead"; read something else!). LASA will absolutely have books to loan to each student during the year so no need to buy anything. However, if your student likes to annotate their books or likes to have their own copy, please consider buying them during our book fair so LASA can get the credit from your purchase. Again, this is absolutely optional.
Look for a post later this spring with the dates and a SignUp Genius link to let us know if you'll be attending. If you'd like to grab a copy of the book AND support your new school you can buy a copy during the LASA Book Fair using this link and the code LASA at checkout: https://www.bookpeople.com/lasa-fundraiser
If you are a member of Austin Urban Scholars at Kealing then you can pick up a copy of the book from Ms. Tenorio before school lets out. If you are a member of Breakthrough, then you'll receive a copy of the book when you start summer camp.
Book Recommendations
Looking for some book recommendations on parenting the gifted student, Time management/organization or even college planning? We compiled a list of books that while not "endorsed" by LASA, they have often been mentioned in trainings, meetings, professional development, and parent talks. Many of these have been recommended by LASA Admin and counselors. They are linked here in one spot to make it easier for viewing and shopping at Austin's local book store, Book People.

Required 9th Grade Readings:
- In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez
- Macbeth (Folger edition, but ELA says any edition is actually ok)
New to LASA Summer Book Club - OPTIONAL
We had a great time last year, so LASA is again hosting a Summer Book Club for incoming students: we'll be reading Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson. This book club is completely optional but we hope you'll decide to join us in reading this award-winning coming-of-age novel that features a remarkable main character navigating many of the issues that LASA students navigate. Then come to one of our on-campus meetings where we'll chat about the book, meet other new students (plus some awesome returning students who will be Literary Leaders), and finish up with popsicles. Parents: if you'd like to stay on campus we're planning to have current LASA parents hosting an informal meet & greet.
